Good evening,

I acquired a second pair of 33/303 yesterday which I will upgrade using the relevant dada kits. I will use the 303 along with my other 303 on a vertical bi-amp configuration and I plan to use the remaining 33 with my 606 power amp, bypassing all tone controls (just one input and volume control). I looked all over the web for a rc motorized volume pot with power on/off capability. I came along many options but in the end I got rather confused. Has anyone tried anything similar?

Thank you in advance!

I doubt you can fit a motorized volume control into a 33, but you can use an outboard RC box. There is an article about how to do this in the Blog, see link above, entitled 'PGA2311 based remote volume control'.

I have put one of these eBay items into a couple of 33s. (TRouble adding the link but search for one of these)

9V Infrared ALPS Remote Control Volume Control Board Potentiometer Pre AMP Motor

It was a tight squeeze, I had to trim the board down through the centre of the holes beside the pot. I also had to replace the Quad balance pot with a physically smaller one.

It needs a separate power supply as the 33 can’t cope so you’ll need to find a way into the 33 with 9v.

I moved the led to the volume knob on long leads so that it moves with the knob.  The I.R. Sensor sits along side the led that replaced the bulb in the Quad logo.  (My logo had been ‘cleaned off’ so I don’t know how it will work with an original logo.

The on/off switch was a little more difficult but with a bit of perseverance it works.

I forgot to mention... I ordered one that showed a 50k pot in the photos but a 100k was sent. Probably best to make sure before you order!

Hi, thank you all for your response. The 9V kit is very interesting. A separate transformer must be mounted inside and an on/off switch mounted at the back. There is someone on YouTube by the name "The Oldgit" who has managed to implement a rc volume and remote on/off on a Quad 33 along with its transformer. You can search for "Quad 33 upgrade, adding remote control & BT - start to finish". Looks very promising!

Yes, I'm 'The Oldgit', I tried Buffoons IR method first but found it to be rather unreliable unfortunately, maybe I was just unlucky. I tried my own designs without much success, so went for an Arduino controlled motorised ALPS pot which has been perfectly reliable and in use for over a year now.

The big problem is that there is just enough room for a motorised ALPS pot, but not enough room for one combined with an on/off switch (even if you can find one!). So, to power on and off requires an addition relay making space extremely tight. This then entails more programming, a driver circuit and addition power requirements of course. But it can be done.

With hindsight I've realised that there is enough exposed shaft on the VC (between chassis and front fascia) to mount a tiny neodymium magnet that can be used to switch a magnetic reed switch. Or better, drill a hole in underside of the volume knob (towards to outer diameter) and insert the magnet in the knob itself. This is how I'd do it next time.

BTW there's a lot of fake ALPS pots on eBay, so buy from a reputable source!

Small world! Believe me when I say that there others here (Greece) that have seen your video and wait for your kit, not only for the Quad 33 but for other preamps as well.
