Hi,

Are there any discernable differences in sound quality between a serviced 303 or 405-2 or do they sound very similar?

I have a quad 34 pre which i am going to service, but am not sure about power amps.

The 303 is actually my favourite looking amp and seems a little cheaper compared to the 405-2 on the second hand market at the moment.

I'm going to be using them into small Harbeth monitors in a recording studio set-up.Thanks for any thoughts.

That's a tricky question to answer! I have both and a modified 405. The 303 has been revised with the dada kit but the 405-2 is standard but recently recapped. Soundwise the 303 is the more 'musical' but the 405-2 has a bigger soundstage with a bit more top end detail. I use these with upgraded 33, 44 preamps and have tried a passive. Speakers are ESL 57's, various vintage Wharfedales or LS3/5a's.

To get the best from these amps a service/revision makes a big improvement. Whichever one you choose I'm sure you'll be pleased with the quality.

Somehow I always go back to the 303.....

 Regards

Search 405 vs. 303 vs. 306 on this forum.

Good luck.

Thanks for the posts. I have just bought a bbc 303 to restore. I'll wait till it arrives before ordering parts as i'm not sure what it will need. :)
