Dear DaDa's,

Am currently working on a Quad 33 with a > 99000 serial # using your upgrade kit. my 10th or so 33 project.

Much to my surprise its backpanel has a native (!) RCA (or cinch) disc input - withno apparent user modifications applied. After close inspection, it appears the backpanel hasnot been modified or altered in any way or form.

I have not come across such a feature ever before nor have I seen any in pictures.

My question is: is this common in this serial # range as far as your vast knowledge stretches?

Thanks in advance,

J.

Not a Quad mod as far as I am aware. Can you provide a picture somewhere?

Nice neat job. I've only ever seen that at the website I linked above and one 33 with a completely different backplate that had been done down in Truro, also with shortened tape and phono adapter boards.

Hard to believe it was done by Quad as you suggested in your email, as they kept using DIN plugs until the late 1970s.

I think it is plausible it is a Quad modification. According to the document on the download page (Quad Production History and Serial Numbers), Quad  made the 33’s until 1982, so if, as you said, Quad kept using DIN plugs until the late 1970s, it is possible.

Late 1970s at least. I have a 34 from 1987-8 with DIN plugs. The photo you sent me shows machine work around the original DIN phono socket. I've seen hundreds of 33s of all vintages without ever seeing this, and only one of the Truro mods I mentioned above.
