Is it possible to use an iPod with the Quad 34? I have a cable with the red/white connectors going to the headphone socket on the iPod

You can, but keep the output volume of the iPod low, otherwise the 34 will be overloaded. Use the tape input, in most 34's you can adjust the sensitivity.

The maximum output of an iPod is a well-guarded secret of Apple, and depends on whether you are using the line output, when available, or the headphone output, in which case it also depends on the volume you have set on the iPod. I've seen various figures for the line output, including 1.2V which I measured myself some years ago, but sadly I cannot remember whether it was peak, RMS, or PP :-|
