Wish to see if old ESLs work

Hello all. I have two sets of ESLs in remote storage, a pair of 57 and a pair of original 63. It is not practical to move them at this time. I'd like the easiest way to see if they work.

Unfortunately, I can't move my Quad amp to that location, but I have an older Crown D-75 and preamp I could use. Would the Crown be suitable just for verification of operation of the Quads? I realize the speakers should be powered for a day or so to reach full quality, but that won't be possible either. Just thought I'd see if they work.

Any suggestions appreciated.

No. There is a warning in the D-75 manual specifically against using transformer-coupled speakers 'including electrostatics'.

You need to be rather careful about what amplifier you connect to an ESL-57. They blew up quite a few in their day. You'd be perfectly safe with any Quad or Radford amp, or any Leak valve amp, but not just any old thing.

Thanks for the warning! I have a 405, but it hasn't been powered in years, so I'm reluctant to try that. I have a 606, that hasn't been adjusted yet for US voltage, so I guess I'll just do the conversion and use it.

Although the 606 might be too powerful for the 57s, I don't want to play the speakers loudly, just see if they work. Would the 606 be okay for my purpose?

I wish someone would do some simple videos on how to change the voltage on the various 66 units and the 606. I have the manuals of course, but it would be so much better to see someone do it step by step.

606 is OK. Keep the volume well down, of course. 405 ditto.

Hello
I have the same configuration as you say 2 ESL 57 and 2 ESL 63.
The 57 are driven by a quad amp 303 through a preamplifier Hafler dh101 that I refurbished.
The 63 are driven by a tube amplifier.
For me the 303 quad amp is far finer and detailed, with a dream medium, than the 405 that I own and I upgraded with the kit dadaelectronic. It is not bad and is well suited for the 63 but anyway it takes a preamp quality. The 63 are pure marvels with electronic tube (KT 88 for example) they have a lower and more spacious than the 57 that are very directional.
But what a joy the association quad 303 and ESL 57. If you can add a preamplifier stage lamps before it is nirvana.
I will send you if you want my tests, if you want
Sincerely
