My Quad 34 Mk2 (serial number in the 17 thousand) has had the dada revision two years ago and it has played very well. All of a sudden, I get very hard noises, crackling and distortion when I switch on the amp or when I touch the volume controls. Sometimes even at level 0 there are loud noises and distortion, but not always. When i set the controls at my normal listening level, sometime the distortion comes and goes.

I removed the balance slider as described in the latest revision manual but that didn't help al all. Could the volume controls be broken or could something be the problem?

I suggest you clean and redo the six solder joints for the volume control. They are in two lines of three, easy to spot. They can tend to form dry joints over long periods. While you're in there, do the same thing for the joints for the DIN or RCA sockets, whichever you have.

Thanks EJP! That was the problem, indeed. I have soldered the volume control and the RCA sockets, just to make sure. The set is playing like old times!
