I have just acquired a 405-2 and on the back it says: Conversion by Lucid Designs Ltd. I have spoken to the only lucid designs that I can find, in Manchester, here in the uk and they told me that they have never done hifi equipment. Can you throw any light on this? Have you ever heard of them?

I found a Lucid Audio in Bristol, but it is unlikely they had something to do with Quad, but why are you looking for them, want to sue them -;)?

Joost, I have just been advised that it could be a Chinese clone how can I tell. It has an all black case.

You could start just checking the outer dimensions of the case. According to the 405-2 instruction book from the downloads section it should be:

H: 115mm (4,5"), W: 340.5mm (13.4"), D: 195mm (7.7")

The chinese clones are rarely using the exact same dimensions. As mentioned on the Dada blog, the amplifier boards itself usually have different dimensions. I don't have any reference values for the original ones at hand, though.

When inspecting the boards, look out for the typical Quad PCB numbering, e.g M12565. Also the issue is usually printed on the original boards. The clones usually do not replicate that.
